Rice Cooker Oyakodon

Dishcovered by @iamralphsutton

Oyakodon is a comforting dish consisting of chicken and eggs simmered together in a sweet and savory sauce, served over a bowl of steamed rice. Instead of making it the traditional way in a pan over the stove, we are taking the easy route and making it in a rice cooker.

Directions

  1. 1

Rinse the rice thoroughly and place it in the rice cooker. Add water as you normally would for the rice you are using.

  2. 2

To a medium-sized bowl, add the soy sauce, hondashi, mirin, and sugar. Add your diced chicken and thinly sliced onions. Toss to coat in the sauce.

  3. 3

Place the chicken and onions on top of the rice in the rice cooker. Pour in any leftover sauce from the bowl.

  4. 4

Start the rice cooker on the standard Plain setting and cook until done, typically about 20-25 minutes.

    about 22m
  5. 5

While the rice cooks, crack the eggs into a small bowl and beat with chopsticks or a fork for about 20 seconds.

  6. 6

Once the rice cooker finishes, quickly open it, pour the beaten eggs over the hot chicken and rice, and close the lid immediately to trap steam.

  7. 7

Turn on the rice cooker again using the same setting and cook for an additional 2-4 minutes.

    about 3m
  8. 8

Open the rice cooker, serve into bowls, and garnish with chopped green onions and roasted sesame seeds. Drizzle with extra soy sauce if desired.
